Firestone Giant Makes Tracks in Denmark

It was only a matter of time before the world’s largest agricultural radial tyre ever produced would be put to work in the field. And as it turns out, the honour of the first European fitment of the new Firestone 850/75R42 sized DT23 goes to Denmark.

Kristian Kappel of the family-run Brunshøjgaard farm in Thy, Denmark first came into contact with the tyre at a local agricultural show in June 2013. Once convinced of the Firestone DT23’s superior performance and efficiency, it took just a few short weeks to deliver and install all four tyres, together with customised rims to fit the farm’s Steiger 450, all in time for harvest.

New Firestone Performer Row Crop

With the new Performer Row Crop series Firestone has once more developed a solution for the growing worldwide trend of increasing volumes and weight of agricultural machinery. With their high load capacity, long tyre life and excellent traction resulting in higher speed, the Performer Row Crop tyres offer reduced end-user costs and maximised efficiency.

Sprayers, like other agricultural equipment, are evolving to more productive, more efficient and more versatile vehicles, making them more powerful, larger and heavier. Our challenge was to adapt the tyres to be able to carry these heavier loads. Thanks to reinforced casings and the steel belt, the Performer Row Crop offers the possibility to carry heavier tanks and transport them at high speeds in all safety and comfort, enhancing the efficiency of the spraying operations.

Firestone Maxi Traction IF agricultural tyre

Independent tests conducted during 2012 in Belgium and Germany prove the overall superiority of Firestone Maxi Traction IF agricultural tyres in traction and work rate. Traction tests comparing Maxi Traction IF with three main competitors, including top-selling tyre brands in Europe, show that the Firestone tyre has the lowest slip rate 1 – resulting in stronger traction. The field tests also confirm Maxi Traction’s higher work capacity, showing a larger surface area work rate 2 than the same three competitors.

The same testing programme shows that Maxi Traction IF has an above-average tyre footprint, adding the benefit of lower soil compaction to its top traction performance.

Tyre Pressure App For Smartphone

Firestone has introduced a free Europe-wide iPhone application to help farmers maintain their tractor tyres at the right pressure. When the “Tyre Pressure Calculator” app is downloaded, users simply select their tyre size and then see the correct tyre pressure for the load and speed of their tractor.

Operating a tractor on incorrect pressure shortens tyre life and can unnecessarily increase soil compaction, which reduces crop yield. When changing farming activity (for example between field work and road transport) the app can help farmers maximize tyre life by adjusting to recommended tyre pressure.
